Public Service Proposal

When school is not in session, children are left to stay at home alone or to roam the streets.

Joshua Tree Kids Club (JTKC) currently provides a much needed recreation and educational program for children 6-14 years of age, during the time they are not at school and would otherwise be home alone. The community of Joshua Tree and the areas surrounding it are made up of very-low to low-to-moderate income families. There are few affordable social outlets available for the children of our community. The need for our program has greatly increased with more and more parents taking minimum wage jobs. While attendance last year was 9,100, this year we anticipate attendance of over 18,000.

JTKC will offer a complete recreation program, as well as offering additional educational end social outlets for the children that become involved. Activities are supervised in a safe wholesome environment while providing for an opportunity for children to organize themselves and learn the importance of leadership and the necessity of self-control. Children will learn the importance of becoming a mentor to the younger children with whom they must work and play.

The supervised program will include, but is not limited to: Homework, reading, tutoring & computer lab. Arts & crafts, special events, field trips and community service projects. also a variety of organized recreational activities; ping pong, pool table games, game tournaments and weather permitting, outdoor sports activities.

The program will be offered Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on days schools are not in session. On school days the program will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again at 2:45 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Snacks will be provided twice a day. On full days the children have the option to bring their lunches or purchase a nutritionally balance lunch prepared in County-approved kitchens. This program is scheduled to end on December 31, 1999.
