Humanity - The Red Cross is dedicated to preventing and alleviating human suffering wherever it may be found - both at home and abroad. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure that human beings receive the respect they deserve.

Impartiality - The Red Cross does not descriminate concerning nationality, race, religious beliefs, class, or political opinions. It seeks to relieve suffering, giving priority to those in the most acute distress.

Neutrality - The Red Cross may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in cotroversies of a political, racial, religious, or ideological nature.

Independence - All national societies that make up the International Red Cross Movement are independent. While they are auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their respective countries, they must maintain their automony; this enables them to act in accordance with Red Cross Principles.

Voluntary Service - The Red Cross is a voluntary relief organization not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

Unity - Only one Red Cross society is permitted in any one country. It must be open to all. The society must carry out its humanitarian work throughout its territory.

Universality - The Red CRoss is a worldwide institution. All societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other.
